Premature Ovarian FailureBy:
Have you heard of any treatments for premature ovarian failure? I am 30 years old and have been recently diagnosed.
--Jenny
You and your doctor should first try to figure out why this might have occurred. The cause of this rare disorder is often undetectable, but possible explanations can include genetics, surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or immune abnormalities.
Testing for anti-ovarian antibodies may provide useful information. When premature ovarian failure (POF) is caused by an immune problem, it may be correctable with a course of hormones that suppress your immune system.
Even if no cause is identified, you should investigate hormone replacement therapy (HRT), which may cause your condition to reverse by itself. Every year, I see one or two patients who experienced POF at an early age and conceived while on HRT.
