Migraines & Vision LossBy:
I started having migraines after I turned 40. Now that I take Prozac I only have one or two a year. Before that I already had severe floaters. With my migraines I lose sight in my eyes for 30-45 minutes. Do my eyes deteriorate with each migraine?

Migraines are caused by constriction of blood vessels in the brain. The constriction is temporary. When the constricted blood vessels are those that supply a portion of the brain involved with sight, visual loss may occur. In general, eyes do not deteriorate with migraines.
Floaters are a different matter. Floaters are usually, but not always, due to an opaque or cloudy piece of the jelly in the back of the eye that swings into the visual axis. It is important that all patients with floaters have regular eye exams, because retinal holes and tears can occur when the floaters first appear.
