Journal Exercise: What I Love & Hate About Smoking

By: Debora Orrick

For your first journal exercise, brainstorm about two lists. You might want to put them side-by-side on the page because that seems to make this particular exercise more poignant.

For the first list, brainstorm on all of the situations in which you love to smoke and the reasons why you love to smoke. This list might include (1) having a cigarette at the end of a meal, (2) having a cigarette after making love, (3) smoking to help reduce anxiety or stress, or (4) smoking to help focus on a task.

For the second list, brainstorm on all of the situations and reasons that make you hate smoking and want to quit. This list might include (1) feeling like cigarettes control your life too much, (2) disliking the way your mouth tastes so bad in the morning from smoking, (3) considering the way that smoking has affected your stamina, or (4) thinking about the way that your smoking affects the health of your children.
